Many of us are used to dialing 911 for a medical emergency or dialing 411 for directory assistance. What most people don’t know, however, is that you can dial the 211 service for a financial emergency and get quick help from various government agencies who are set up to help Americans in financial need. Welfare assistance, public assistance and food stamp programs are available through 211.
Food
Food pantries are some of the most important welfare assistance or public assistance programs, providing free groceries to those in need. Supported by regional food banks, distribution points are churches, synagogues and other faith-based centers. However, each center may have its own rules, based on geography, number of participants, or even on supply available. For those who may have long-term food needs, it would be better to apply for food stamps directly at local government offices. However, be aware that there are eligibility guidelines, such as family income and special consideration for children, the disabled and the elderly.
Housing
Welfare assistance and public assistance programs and services can source out places for people to live. For short-term occupancy, shelters are an option, but vouchers are often for overnight stays only. Many of these shelters are also for individuals rather than families.
There are two main public assistance programs for long-term subsidized housing: Section 8 and public housing. Section 8 finds low-cost housing for qualified people (with percentage of income for rent - around 30% for some states, the rest paid for by the government), while public housing is as it sounds: housing units owned by the local government (rent subsidized depending on certain conditions). Housing authorities from the city government or township are usually the ones who are in control of housing units.
Healthcare
For many, they can rely on state or federal medical insurance programs or service packages. However, if one does not qualify for this welfare assistance, the county-based subsidized healthcare may be the answer. Be sure apply for any medical grant, benefit or insurance package you qualify for, as medical concerns are often urgent and you can’t afford any delay in getting medical attention for yourself or your family. There are two major programs: Medicare is a federal-level program for people 65 years in age and older who qualify due to particular disabilities or conditions, while Medicaid is a social welfare and protection program for eligible individuals and families in the low-income bracket.
So remember to keep 211 services in mind, be it for food stamps or information on various programs that can help you get by until you get back on your feet.
